Munnar itself is so small that it is easily manageable by foot. The town has some local transport, including auto-rickshaws, should one get bit tired of moving around on foot. Auto rickshaws, commander jeep and taxis are available for local shared transport. For sites further out of town, like Top Station and Thattekad, a rented bike or taxi is the best option. There are some tour operators in town that will arrange excursions to more out laying places. The area surroundings Munnar can also be accessed using the regular buses that leave for Theni, Top Station, Marayoor and Chinnar, among others.

The nearest airport is Kochi (Cochin Nedumbassery - COK) airport, 130 km away from Munnar. Can also be reached from Madurai Airport (IXM), 155 km from Munnar.
Rail
Kochi is the nearest railway station, which is connected to all the major cities in India. Madurai Junction (mdu) 165 km from Munnar and Coimbatore Junction (cbe) 165 km from Munnar are the other choices. You will have to go by road from these Stations.
Road
Munnar is accessible by road from most of the cities and town in Kerala.You can also reach Munnar form Coimbatore (6 hrs away) and Madurai (5 hrs away) in TamilNadu.
By Bus Munnar is well connected by road from all towns in south India. Regular bus services are available from all towns in Kerala and Tamilnadu.

Travelling To Munnar by Road (Kochi Route)
With the lush greenness of flourishing foliage, rambling with tea plantations enshrouded in cool mist is the picturesque Munnar, which is just approximately 4.5 hours (135 km) drive from the hot and humid coastal seashore of Kochi. The roads leading to Munnar are less cluttered and enjoyable compared to the ones leading to other hill stations.
The Kochi - Munnar route is the one of the way of reaching Munnar for foreign and native tourists via Kerala, with the nearest Airport, the Nedumbassery Airport and Aluva Railway station, both situated near Kochi. The route extends through Thripunithra, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam, Adimali and Pallivasal.
After you skip Kochi, the ride is smooth and fast while enjoying the countryside view along Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam. From Kothamangalam (which is 80 km from Munnar), to Adimali you can experience the natural forest with some brisk waterfalls in between.
Though Adimali is only around 30 km from Munnar, it takes an hour to reach there because of the many curves and turns in the road. The drive to Munnar involves about 2 hours through the ghat section. There are 17 hairpin bends on the way. You will start seeing tea plantations and the breath taking view of the western ghats, at about 8 kilometers from Munnar.
Travelling To Munnar by Road (Madurai Route)
From Madurai, you will be travelling westward to Munnar, early morning ride would be great. You will pass across small towns of Usilampatti, Theni and Bodi in the plains. At Bodi, you will start ascending the Ghat roads and soon you will come across Coffee, Cardamom and Teak Plantations. At higher altitudes with the whiff of cool air, you see Tea Estates, ponds and Lakes. Soon you would be at Devikulam town, which is another Tourist Spot near Munnar. Munnar is 7 km from Munnar.
Apart from the Kochi road and Devikulam Road there are two other major roads leading to Munnar - Top Station road and Marayoor road. Munnar is located 70 km from Idukki.
