Marayoor (42 Km from Munnar)
The largest concentration of natural sandal wood trees and the tribal people make this place of a special interest to the serious-minded tourist. The relics of the new stone-age culture, consisting of caves, paintings and the underground tunnels, together with places connected with the legendary wanderings of Rama and Sita of Ramayana and the Pandavas of the Mahabharatha make this place archeologically prominent. A sandal wood factory is also situated here. The sandalwood obtained from this place is of the highest quality.
Marayoor lies 40 Km from Munnar. It is a place not to be missed for its combination of ancient caves, sandalwood trees and souvenirs from ancient civilization and more. A natural forest of fragrant sandalwood trees, Marayoor has a sandalwood factory owned by the Forest Department of Kerala, where attractive objects are d'art crafted from the precious wood.
The other important site here is a series of muniyaras (caves) dating back to the New Stone Age. The muniyaras contain rock paintings of considerable archeological significance, also part of the pre-historic excavations at Marayoor, are dolmenoid burial chambers consisting of four erect stones covered by a horizontal capstone.

Marayoor is located at the outskirt of Munnar at the distance of 42 Km on the way to Chinnar. The relics of new stone-age civilization have been unearthed here. Marayoor is known for its tribal culture. Visitors can see cardamom plantation, Coffee plantation and Orange grove wild Greek on the way to Marayoor. This is the only place where natural sandalwood forest is seen. The sandalwood here is high quality. Sandalwood forests stretch for few kilo meters. There is a Sandalwood Dept too near the forest where we can see the sandalwood processing. In the forest there is a Children's Park and Deer Park. A major area of Marayoor forest have been covered by Sandalwood and Bamboo forests. Muniyaras Cave - The dwelling caves of ancient tribal located at 1 Km away from Marayoor on the way to Kanthalloor. These caves have been made of huge rocky planks or slabs. These were holy caves where the ancient sages used to meditate. The sight of the cave really a wonder. Visitors can also find a temple on the bank of Pambar which has been created in a single rock.
