Mattupetty Lake and Dam or Swiss Livestock Project Farm (13 Km from Munnar) - Munnar, Kerala
Mattupetty Lake and Dam, which lie 13 Km from Munnar, en route Top Station, at an altitude of 1700 Mt, are popular picnic spot with visitors. The lake and dam surrounded by wooden hills and tea plantations, makes a great view.
The Shola forests around Mattupetty are ideal for trekking and bird watching, with the variety of birds found there. Small streams and waterfalls cut through the tract here and there, which again adds more attraction to the place. Boating is also allowed on Mattupetty Lake and combined with picnic and trekking, makes for a great outing from Munnar. Mattupetty Dam was built in the late 1940's The Mattupetty Dam at a distance of 13 Km from Munnar is a popular picnic spot. Boating and horse riding facilities are available at the place. One of the largest cattle breeding projects of India, raising over hundred varieties of high yielding, the Indo-Swiss Project is the star attraction here. Though the visitors are not allowed into all the cattle sheds, there is a lot to see and learn. Besides, the Mattupetty lake and dam near by with boating facilities provided by the District Promotion Council of Idukki await the fun loving tourists. Herds of elephants can be occasionally sighted on the banks of the lake. The garden maintained by the project sports over 250 varieties of roses, 71 varieties of dianthus, several varieties of dahlias, etc. Situated at a height of 1700 m, Mattupetty is known for its highly specialised dairy farm-the Indo Swiss Livestock Project. Over a 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle are reared here. Visitors are allowed into 3 of the 11 cattle sheds at the farm. Visiting time 0900-1100 hrs and 1400-1530 hrs. Rate Rs.5 per head. Swiss Livestock Project FarmAlso known as Mattupetty (cattle village), the Swiss Livestock Project is a highly specialized dairy farm where over a hundred breeds of highly yielding cattle are reared in eleven cattle sheds. Visitors are allowed into three of the sheds during fixed hours.The project was established in 1961 by Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB). Situated at the height of 1700 Mtrs above sea level, Mattupetty is located at 12 Km away from Munnar on the way to Top Station. The grass mounts of the Indo-Swiss Project, a great variety of trees and plants are eye catching sights. Even, during day time, elephants roaming through the thick Eucalyptus trees. The Mattupetty Lake spread over 8 Km. The District Tourism Promotion Council, Idukki District, has made arrangement for boating in this lake. Many varieties of boats are available for boating like speed boat, rover boat, big slow boat etc. The Mattupetty lake and dam is a very beautiful picnic spot.
