Rajamalai (15 Km from Munnar) - Munnar, Kerala
Half the world population of the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare variety of mountain goat on the verge of extinction, live in Rajamala. The abundance of tourists and the proximity of the staff employed by the forest department have made them almost tame. Kurinji flowers, which bloom all over the hills once in 12 years, draping the grassy hills, as far as the eye can see, with blue flowers, attract thousands of tourists. The proximity of Eravikulam wildlife sanctuary is also an added attraction.
Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary -located 15 Km from Munnar is the natural habitat of Nilgiri Tahr. Half the world population of the rare mountain goat is concentrated in this region. Eravikulam National Park - Rajamalai - the second prominent National Park in Kerala, is situated at 12 K m away from Munnar on the way to Marayoor. The park which covers an area of 97 Sq km of rolling grass land and rocky peaks, is breathtakingly beautiful and akin to the Alps. Anaimudi being the highest peak in South India (8850 ft.) The whole park is composed of mounts, beautiful meadows and valleys. The park is originally meant to protect one of the rare species, Nilgiri Tahr. As per world report only 2000 Tahrs are alive on the earth in which 1000 Tahrs in this park. The local name for the Tahr is "Varai aadu". Another attraction of this park is Neelakurinji, one of the rarest flower on the earth known for its beauty and medicine importance. The Neelakurinji bloom only once in 12 years. The flowering season lasts for about one month. The whole area baths in the violet of the Kurinji flowers during this season. The Eravikulam National Park is of great ecological importance due to its very rich bio-diversity. The natural habitat of the Niligiri tahr ,Rajamala in Munnar Rajamala is 2695 Mtrs above sea level. Half the world's population of the rare mountain goat or tahr which is fast becoming extinct, is now found here.The Niligiri tahr in Rajamala are now to be found in small herds found in Eravikulam-Rajamala region. The total number of Niligiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated to be over 1300. Nilgiri Tahr get yourself over to Rajamallay /Rajamala about 17 Km from Munnar is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr (an endangered mountain goat). Rajamala is 2695m above sea level. The Nilgiri Tahrs are today reduced to small herds, found in the Eravikulam-Rajamala region and rarely if ever anywhere else these days; so are well worth seeing while t hey still exist; your grandchildren may never be so lucky. This is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri tahr. Half the world population of the rare mountain goat (Hemitragas bylocres) which is fast becoming extinct, is now found here. The Nilgiri Tahrs are today redused to small herds found in the Eravikulam-Rajamala region. The total number of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated at 1317.
